Weekday Sketchers at the Morgan Library

On Location | The Morgan Library & Museum – Party Rental Ltd. Pink Hippo Blog

Once the private library of JP Morgan, this museum is a jewel box within a treasure chest. A beautiful sunlit atrium connects us to the various galleries, restaurants and shops and brings us to the library building: an over-the-top tribute to great wealth and influence

The current exhibitions offers us opportunity to explore the life of Morgan's personal librarian, Belle de Costa Greene,  who is now celebrated as a woman who defied racial barriers, using her knowledge and skills to build a world class library for her boss.   Additional exhibits explore medieval works of art, painting and the world of Franz Kafka.   In other words, lots to keep us busy.

Greenwich During the Revolutionary War
A Frontier Town on the Front Line

In preparation for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, the Greenwich Historical Society presents a timely and dynamic exhibition that takes a fresh look at the impact of the Revolutionary War on our community.

The Revolution may have started in Massachusetts, but it soon spread to Connecticut, particularly Fairfield County and Greenwich, the gateway to Patriotic New England. With their safety and livelihood at risk, residents had to choose whether to support American Independence, to remain loyal to King George III or claim neutrality. This is the story of the people of Greenwich and their neighbors in Fairfield County, living, working, fighting, fleeing or dying on the front line of the Revolutionary War.

Weekday Sketchers at Brooklyn Navy Yard

Public Spaces - Brooklyn Navy Yard
Entrance to Blg 77 on Flushing Ave

Join us this week as we explore this vibrant location on the East River, whose history dates back to before the Revolution.  Once the site of the horrific British Prison Ships during the Revolutionary War , this site has transitioned from the ship yard that amazingly built the vessels that won the Second World War to a decommissioned site of empty buildings and equipment.  Now in its present reincarnation, the Brooklyn Navy Yard is a vibrant hub of emergent businesses, movie studios, museums and retail food shops.

Come and explore the colorful food hall and the industrial landscape of ships, cranes and equipment that line its streets and alleys.

Weekday Sketchers at Transit Museum

Family on a Vintage Train - Courtesy of the New York Transit Museum - New York Transit Museum

The Transit Museum is a mix of nostalgia and futuristic travel.  Housed in a decommissioned subway station the collection takes us back in time to experience the history, art and artifacts of the transit system, while giving us a glimpse into the future for commuter travel.

Unique to museum visits, the Transit Museum is experiential as well as educational. Come, sit in and sketch the subway cars and busses through time. Or, explore the extensive technology displays that demonstrate how the system keeps running.  Or, explore the exhibit Ticket to Ride to find out how the subway fares have been collected through the ages, walk through the evolution of turnstiles and learn about the enormous task of collecting the fares and insuring that they get to where they need to go.

Wonder and Awe In Natural History's Stunning New Wing. - The New York Times
Glider Center

We have all been to the American Museum of Natural History to see the dinosaurs and the dioramas.  But how many of us have explored the Gilder Center in the recently constructed addition along Columbus Avenue?  This week let's take an in-depth look at this interesting place.  Built to look like and underground cavern. (my opinion! What;s yours?) this area houses the gem collection, the Insectarium and the newest fossil (can a fossil be new?) the Apex Stegosaurus.

Not interested in bugs or gem stones? No problem.  The rest of the incredible museum awaits you and your sketchbook!

Thanks to Carol Krieder and Meryl Greenblatt for suggesting this location.
