SATURDAY: St John the Divine

 

On Saturday let's sketch what might be NYC's most impressive church.  

In a city of skyscrapers, the Cathedral impresses with sheer size. Its detailed facade towers over Amsterdam Avenue, and the building extends a full avenue block to Morningside Drive.

The Cathedral is more than 120 years old, and remains unfinished. Despite incomplete construction, it is the largest cathedral in the world, making it a global landmark. Incredible ​t​o consider, the Statue of Liberty could fit under the church's dome.

When:  SATURDAY, December 14, 2024

Where: 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th Street, one block east of Broadway.  (see map below)

How:  
By Subway -

Take the 1, B, or C Train to the 110th Street / Cathedral Parkway station. (see map below)

By Car -

From the North and East sides: FDR Drive to 96th Street; west on 97th Street; north on Amsterdam Avenue to 112th Street

Admission:
• Admission is $15 for adults,
• $12 for seniors and
• $10 for students visiting the Cathedral for sightseeing purposes.

• Your generous donations are greatly appreciated.

                 
Lunch: 12:00 Noon - There are many food choices on Broadway, one block away.  We will probably not be eating together​ as a big group.

Afternoon:  1 PM (approx.) - Back sketching.

Show and Tell:  3 PM  There are many quiet spots in the church where we can share our artwork.  We will determine the best spot while we’re there.

FRIDAY, December 13, 2024: Westchester Sketchers at the Katonah Museum of Art

  

The Katonah Museum of Art is a non-collecting institution geared towards visual arts, located in Katonah, New York.  The Museum presents changing exhibitions that cross a spectrum of artistic disciplines, cultures, and historical periods.  Housed in an elegant building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Katonah Museum of Art originates three to four major exhibitions annually.

Jonathan Becker: Lost Time

This exhibition is guest curated by Mark Holborn in conjunction with the artist's monograph, forthcoming by Phaidon. Spanning Becker’s illustrious career from his formative period in Paris as a protégé of Brassaï through today, his work features some of the most fascinating and important subjects across contemporary culture. Whether celebrated within the pages of Vanity Fair and Vogue or gracing museum walls, Jonathan Becker remains one of the leading visual storytellers of our time.

Time: Our official event will be 1:00 - 3:00 pm, but please arrive before 1:00 PM to start with a tour of the current exhibit.  We will be participating in the SENIOR SOCIAL AFTERNOON of art, refreshments, and socializing. Our own Lucia Yee will be giving a demo of her process for drawing a face. Advanced registration recommended.

From NYC: From Grand Central Terminal, take the Metro-North Harlem Line to Katonah Station. The trip one-way from Grand Central is about 1 hour 15 minutes. The Museum is located 0.7 miles east of the Katonah train station. From the train station, it is a 10-20-minute walk. Taxi service is also available. For daily train schedules, visit MTA. 

LUNCH: Due to our later start, we will not stop for lunch.

NOTES: 

• Admission: Seniors $9, others $12.
• Reciprocal Admission: Fairfield Westchester Museum Alliance (FWMA), North American Reciprocal Museum Association (NARM), American Alliance of Museums (AAM) Members.  Also check check your local Library Pass Program.
• Food, drink, chewing gum and tobacco products are not allowed in the galleries.
• PENCIL ONLY in the galleries, and we have to be sitting down when we draw, not walking or standing with pencils out. We can use watercolor and non messy materials in the Learning Center and outside. 
• The museum has stools and we should use them.

December 11, 2024 NY Historical

 Weekday Sketchers at NY Historical

Join us this week as we return to the New York Historical (formally the NY Historical Society) just in time to capture the yearly display of antique toy trains and toys, along with many other exhibits now on display. 

Branded as New York's first Museum or sometimes New York City's Attic, the Historical has a treasure trove of artifacts that make fabulous sketch book material.  Housed in a beautiful building across from the American Museum of Natural History, we can spend hours, or more likely days, sketching the beautiful Tiffany lamps, the exhibit on What Women Wore or the exhibit on Pets in the City. Of course there is always the wonderful open storage area with amazing artifacts from years gone by. And the replica of the Oval Office in the Meet the President exhibit.

SATURDAY 12/7/24 : Sketch the Art and Design Draw-a-Thon 20

 

This coming Saturday, December 7th, the High School of Art and Design is running their Draw-A-Thon fundraiser, a perfect event for sketchers.   

The HS is an important NYC institution that has trained New York based artistic children, including many of our members and their children.  They are also our hosts for our annual Portrait Party (coming up soon - Feb 1st!)   

The nine-hour drawing and painting event will provide an opportunity for art students and professional artists to work side by side from a group of live models. Poses will vary from short sessions of five minutes, twenty minutes and one hour poses. Extended poses of three and six hours will also be available. There will be a dedicated room for costume (heroic/cosplay) figure drawing and a separate room for nude/traditional figure drawing.

The High School is located at 245 East 56th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
The event starts at 10 AM and continues until 7 PM. 

The HS provides chairs and they sell food at the event.  In addition to Urban Sketchers the event attracts artists from all over the NY area.  At every event I see at least one or two art friends who I haven’t seen in years.
