SATURDAY: Sketch the Chinese Scholar’s Garden

The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden
is part of the
Staten Island Botanical Garden, located in the Snug Harbor Cultural Center.

for SATURDAY, October 5, 2024

A location so peaceful the tranquility will seep into your artwork.  Getting there is half the fun.  We’ll get to sample almost all of NYC’s different types of mass transit.  Our focus will be on the garden, but the grounds at Snug Harbor are extensive with lots of interesting views and foliage.

We will be meeting the Plein Air Painters of New York who will be sketching with us at the Garden

It’s a wonderful sketching location that you’ll love.

DETAILS

We meet at the Staten Island Ferry, our starting point, at 10:00 AM.

DIRECTIONS:

Part 1 - THE SUBWAY:

Take the subway to lower Manhattan, via the 1 train to South Ferry or the 4/5 train to Bowling Green or the R train to Whitehall.  Exit and walk south to the Staten Island terminal to take the FREE ferry.

Part 2 - THE FERRY:

After landing in Staten Island take the S40 bus at Gate D to travel along Richmond Terrace, less than a 10-minute ride.

Part 3 - THE BUS:

Let the bus driver know that you want to get off at Snug Harbor.  It's a short walk to the Scholar's Garden where we'll be sketching.

The Cultural Center and the grounds are free, but there is a $5 entrance fee to the Garden.  The Garden is located on the right side towards the back of the property.

LUNCH:   12:30 - We will dine al fresco.  Location to be determined but probably near the Scholar’s Garden.  Your best bet is to bring food.  There are not many choices in the area.

SHOW and TELL:   At 3 PM - location to be determined, probably our lunch spot.  This is the social part of our day when we'll share drawings and tell art stories.

NOTE

  • Bring a folding chair or stool if you have one - it provides more sketching choices.

If you can’t find us
