Another great neighborhood around NYC that can be reached by public transportation. Oyster Bay is a delightful hamlet on the south shore of Long Island Sound. The town has tree lined streets and cute stores. The Sound is nearby with water views, boats and docks we can draw. Several sketchers live nearby so it’s a local neighborhood for them.

Sketch the Battle of Brooklyn
The largest battle of the Revolutionary War was fought throughout what is now known as Brooklyn. Who knew? Much of the battle took place on land that is part of the Green-Wood Cemetery. What did this battle mean to the many different people in New York at the time? What did it mean for the future of our country?
Join us at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York, for the Battle of Brooklyn and the Meaning of Freedom event. The event includes a recreation of the first Oval Office - a hand-sewn, full-scale replicas of General George Washington’s sleeping marquee, baggage tent, and common tents that served as his mobile headquarters while on campaign.
Loads to see and lots to sketch. The weather promises to be good. If you've never been, Green Wood is an amazing place with incredible sweeping views of lower Manhattan and the NYC Harbor.
DETAILS
When: Sunday, August 27, 2023. Meet at the front gate at 10 AM
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th Street and Fifth Avenue, Brooklyn. We will meet just outside the main gate where we’ll start sketching. (see map below)
How:

From Random Black Lines to Finished Drawing: A Workshop with Mel Barranco
on Saturday September 9, 2023
When and Where:
Date: Saturday, September 9, 2023
Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. EDT
Location: Corner of 43rd Street and Vanderbilt Avenue, NYC
About this Event:
During the days of spring and summer, when there’s plenty of light to work with, it’s a joy to create art at a leisurely pace. Less so when the days of fall and winter grow shorter, and evening arrives early. This was the sketch practice dilemma Mel faced before developing his “Pre-marked Pages” method of sketching.
In this workshop, Mel will share with you his technique of creating a visually appealing artwork with big bold marks. You’ll start by creating a “pre-marked” page – a sheet of paper with random black lines drawn on it – and then learn how to integrate and blend the scene in front of you into this page. These first marks will be your friend rather than a distraction. Mel will show you how to use some addition/subtraction techniques to blend the lines into the scene. You’ll also learn to see how details that are present in the scene before you can add impact to your artwork.
