THURSDAY: Westchester Sketchers at Muscoot Farm in Katonah

Muscoot Farm was originally a gentleman's farm owned by the Hopkins family and used as their summer estate and dairy farm from 1880 to 1924. In 1924 the family moved to the farm year-round and continued the dairy business until 1967 when Westchester County acquired the property.

Today, Muscoot Farm has many of the original buildings, some of which were moved to accommodate the Muscoot Reservoir. Visitors can walk through the dairy barn, milk house, ice house, blacksmith shop, and several other barns and buildings. Livestock and poultry are breeds typical of an early 20th-century gentleman's farm and many represent minor rare breeds. The Main House is used to exhibit monthly art shows by local artists.

SATURDAY: Sketching in Brooklyn

On Wednesday afternoon, the weekend forecast shows rain.  It might rain the entire time or we might have gorgeous sunshine for most of the day followed by rain when we're done.  There's no reliable way to know, so we need a sketching plan that accommodates both contingencies.

The Brooklyn Museum is located at a very sketchable location. The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens is next door, and the entrance to Prospect Park is a block away.  Grand Army Plaza has that incredible Civil War arch (like the Arc de Triomphe in Paris).

If we're confronted by rain we'll sketch the day at the Museum.  If the weather looks promising, we'll be outside sketching the arch and the entrance to Prospect Park.  It's a great spot, buzzing with activity.  Here's the plan, we'll meet inside the museum at 11 AM when the museum opens.  Don't get an entry ticket  until we've made a decision about the day.

Inside or out - either way; a day sketching is a good day.  (New people - hold your sketchbook so we see you.)

Weekday Urban Sketchers at Grotto in Central Park

Can you believe that there is a hidden grotto right in Central Park?

Our destination this week is a series of connecting waterways that traverses the north end of Central Park. This lesser known area of the park, known as The Ravine, consists of The Pool, The Glen Span Arch and the Loch going through the Huddleston Arch (made without any mortar) and eventually into the Harlem Meer, offers us a small slice of the Adirondacks with a bit of the urban skyline to capture in our sketches.  Join us for sketching and the search for the "headwaters" of the waterways of Central Park.

Fine Tuning the Saturday Sketch

We Have a New Meeting Spot

for the Saturday Sketch

It's going to be an indoor sketch event tomorrow at the Met..  Same meeting time - 10 AM.

NEW MEETING SPOT
We have a new meeting spot at the Metropolitan Museum.  We'll meet by the column on the first floor, which is towards the end of the left corridor when you enter the museum coming up the main stairs.  (see map)

ALTERNATE ENTRANCE
I generally don't use the main stairs to enter the museum.  The lines are usually long.  It is usually faster  to enter using the school entrance on Fifth Avenue at 81 St.  Anyone can enter there, it's not just for school trips.  There is also a coat check in the basement.  If you take the elevator to the first floor or walk up the stairs you are right in front of our meeting spot by the large column (see photo)

COMING LATE?
Text me for our location.   973-809-9128.  We are not going to stay by the meeting spot past 10:30.

SATURDAY: The Sandwich Sketch

We’re sandwiched between a rainy day forecast for Saturday, and lots of existing Sunday plans for Father’s Day.

I"m up for sketching!   The Met has an exhibit - The African Origin of Civilization.  Let’s use that exhibit and the many beautiful African objects on display as a springboard for our creativity.  The challenge is to sketch more than what you’re seeing.  Loads of ways to interpret that!

IF IT DOESN'T RAIN

The optimist in me says rain might not happen and we could also have a beautiful day.  If we get a great day, let's be outside.  We'll meet by the statue of the bears (See map below - Enter the park at 79th St. and walk in 200 feet)

DETAILS

What:   Join us sketching at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Where:   The Met is at 1000 5th Ave,, between 84th and 80th Streets.  We'll meet in the Africa Room (see map above)

When:  Sketching starts at 10 AM and runs until 3 PM on Saturday, June 17th, 2023.   Sleeping late?  Come anyway.  We’ll be there.

Lunch:  12 PM Noon.  There is a good cafeteria in the basement.  (see attached map to locate stairs).  We’ll meet all the way in the back on the left side.  Buy their food or bringyourowni.

Afternoon:  1 PM - Back to sketching

Show and Tell:  3 PM  We’ll meet in the back of the basement cafeteria to share our drawings, tell stories and talk about art supplies.

NOTE:

-    Stools are always a plus - they give you more options.

-   The Met enforces sketching rules unevenly.  Pencils are always welcome.
