SUNDAY: Sketch the Old Police Headquarters

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY.   (Not Saturday our usual date.)

We’re meeting on Sunday, because so many of our sketchers will be at Maru’s Workshop the day before.  We have a great sketch event planned - ... for Sunday.

We were in Chinatown last weekend.  Canal Street used to be the dividing line between the neighborhoods, with Little Italy to the North and Chinatown to the South.  NOCAN (North of Canal Street, an abbreviation I just made up.) has become a hybrid and a fascinating  very active area.  Between the stores and the people in the streets there is always something going on.

We will start the sketch at the old NYC Police Headquarters.  It is one of the finest Beaux-Arts buildings in all New York.  The city wanted a building that would “impress both the officer and the prisoner with the majesty of the law”.  Yet the Old Police Headquarters remains relatively under-appreciated compared to New York’s other Beaux-Arts buildings, such as the Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library.

Since then, it has been converted into luxury apartments. The exterior and marble-clad entrance hall were preserved, but the rest of the interior was gutted and reworked. It is now home to movie stars, investment bankers and fashion designers: Leonardo DiCaprio, Winona Ryder and Calvin Klein number among the residents.
