Domino Park

Domino Park on the East River is one of the successful reclamations of old industrial land into usable parks.  Situated on site of the Domino Sugar Factory on the East River and accessible via the East River Ferry, this site promises us a fun day of sketching and relaxing along the river.

Just north of the Williamsburg Bridge the park has two water features, a dog run, elevated walkway and  a playground made to resemble the equipment used in the sugar refining process, which will make you wish you were 5 years old again!  We won't run out of things to sketch.

NJ Sketchers at Paterson Falls Sept 29, 2022

Bridgehunter.com | Paterson Great Falls Bridge

QUESTION:
What do cotton and silk fabrics, steam locomotives, continuous rolls of paper and airplane engines, have in common??

ANSWER:  They were all made in Paterson, New Jersey.  And that is because of the Great Falls in Patterson.

The Great Patterson Falls are a both a natural wonder and an integral part of the economic development of New Jersey from the Revolutionary War through the industrial revolution and into the 20th Century.  Join us as we explore the falls, the surrounding park and the old industrial buildings lining the streets around the falls.

Introduction to Direct Watercolor
Subtitled:  How to paint like Suzala
It started a couple of months ago.  During Show and Tell Suzala would tell us that the work she was showing had been painted directly, meaning there was no underdrawing.   No pencil, ... nothing.  She just jumped in.  Joan started working directly too.  They were working large and bold, with deep rich shadows and bold composition.  I think everyone found this new direction exciting, but where to even begin?

Learn the basics of direct watercolor painting.   Direct watercolor is like no other style of painting. Suzala will demonstrate what makes it different and offer you strategies and techniques to overcome the reasonable fear of not having a pencil sketch to guide you when you start to add color.

Suzala will cover all the basics needed to understand the foundations to this type of painting, values, colors, paints and paper
Learn how to start, what to look for, how to stay on target,  and how to finesse what you see into a great painting.

The workshop will take place on Sunday, October 2, 2022 and will be conducted by the fountain at Bryant Park.

SUNDAY: The Blick SuperStore Sketch Event

As New York based artists we all want our local art stores to do well.  Many of us are still in shock at the closing of New York Central and Pearl Paint.  So, it's exciting news that Blick has built a super-store on Broadway near Canal Street .  NYC Urban Sketchers has been invited to a special viewing at the new store.

Blick is preparing a special good-bag for everyone.  Since this requires a bit of work by Blick they've asked us to preregister.  If you use the link below to preregister - there will be a special gift there for you.

The Blick event will influence our day of sketching.  We are expected at the store at 11 AM.  We will meet at a nearby park for about a half hour of sketching before we walk to the new store.  See you at the Albert Capsouto Park at 10 AM.

SATURDAY: Sketch the Old Police Headquarters

As we used to say when I was growing up in Brooklyn,
we’re calling a “do-over” on last week's sketching event.

We had a great day planned for our sketch event but rain kept many people away.  I’ll admit - the weather was discouraging, although we did have a good morning and a very sociable lunch.

We will start at the old Police Headquarters and work our way south through Little Italy.  You can read last week's notes which talks about why this is a great location.  Suffice to say we’re starting at one of the best Beaux Arts buildings in NYC.  And the neighborhood itself is fascinating.  Lots to see and lots to draw!

DETAILS

What:   We will be sketching NOCAN - North of Canal Street

Where:   We’re meeting at the Old Police Headquarters,  located at 240 Centre St.  (see map).  We will meet at the corner of Broome and Centre Streets.

When:  Meet at 10 AM. Saturday, September 17, 2022   Sleeping late?  Come anyway - we’ll be there

How:
