Weekday Sketchers at Chinese Scholars Garden Wednesday

Can you get to China by Ferry?

NOTE:  Since we couldn't go this past Wednesday, let's try again for next Wednesday September 4, 2019

Yes, you can!  Join us on Wednesday and travel to China via the Staten Island Ferry. Well, at least to a garden in Snug Harbor that is as close as you can get to the experience of being in China without actually going there.

Fabricated in Suzhou, China and brought to Staten Island, this oasis is based on Ming Dynasty gardens dating from 1369 - 1644, and features magnificent rocks resembling mountains, Koi ponds, waterfalls, a bamboo forest, a moon gate and eight pavilions.  You will leave feeling that more than one trip is needed to capture the beauty and intricacy of this lovely garden.

SUNDAY: Sketch Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza

Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, NY

The same team that designed Central Park - Olmsted and Vaux designed the complex now known as Grand Army Plaza.  It the official entrance to Prospect Park and it connects the park with the surrounding grand streets.  One of those European style grand streets is Eastern Parkway, the nation's first parkway.  It leads directly to Queens.  The other grand street is Flatbush Avenue which is the Broadway of Brooklyn, cutting through nearly the entire borough.

The Fountain in the Center of Grand Army Plaza

Growing up in Brooklyn I knew Grand Army Plaza because it was on the main route to Manhattan.  It was a place you passed through.  It's odd to return and not hurry through the area.  Join me sketching the area - slowly and leisurely. It's a pleasing view an easy subject for inspiration.

DETAILS

WHERE:  Meet by the fountain at the center of Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza (see map below)

Consider sketching the
Library's incredible doors.
WHEN:  Sunday, August 25, 2019 at 10 AM.  Sleeping late?  No problem, we'll be there.

HOW:  The 2 or the 3 train look like the best bet.  Parking in the neighborhood is challenging, but not impossible.

LUNCH:  12:00  Noon - Bring  your own or buy from vendors and stores in the area.  We'll be dining together al fresco by the fountain.

AFTERNOON:  Back to drawing around 1 PM.

SHOW & TELL 3 PM.  We'll meet outdoors at our lunch spot to share our day's drawings and tell stories.  Maybe we'll even discuss art supplies.
TELL:

NOTES:

-  Anticipate full sun.  Bring a hat.  Sketching can be like sunbathing - be prepared.
-  Bring a stool if you own one. It gives you so many more options.  If you don't own one, there are many models.  Ask your fellow sketcher to try their's so you get an idea of what work's best for you.
