Saturday: Sketch DeKalb Market

Saturday, March 2nd –
DeKalb Market Hall at City Point
445 Albee Square West, Brooklyn, NY 11201
Hosted by Danna Feintuch

DeKalb Market is a feast for the eyes and the belly. With 40 different food vendor stalls, each decorated differently, with great signs, colors, and neon. It's pretty quiet until lunch time when the market will fill with lots of people to draw.

DETAILS:

Where:  DeKalb Market Hall is located on the basement floor at City Point Shopping Center. 445 Albee Square West, Brooklyn.  There are an amazing number of subways very close to the Market.

Transportation:
-   Q, R, B @ Dekalb Station.
-   A, C, F @ Jay St. MetroTech
-   2, 3 @ Hoyt St.

See map below.

When:  Start at 10 a.m.  Meet on the lower level by the escalators.
Note:
There are 2 sets of escalators. We'll meet by escalator you would take if you entered from Flatbush Ave. next to the Trader Joe’s. I’ll be wearing a red bandanna so you can find me.

-   Running late?  Come any, we'll be there!

Lunch12:30 PM The Dekalb Market Hall has 40 Vendors with an amazing diversity of tasty choices like Katz Deli, Pierogi Boys and Ample Hills Creamery to name a few. Choosing just one to eat will definitely be the hardest part of your day!!! For lunch, I suggest eating wherever you can. By this time on weekends, the hall can get very crowded. So, eating in small groups is recommended.

Afternoon1:30 PM  - Back to sketching the Market or consider going up a couple floors to Target or Alamo Drafthouse for the big window view.

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM - We will meet at the back room of the Market. There are big bench tables there where we'll create a space for ourselves.

NOTES:
-   Bringing a stool gives you more options although if you arrive at 10am there’s plenty of seating. It does get busier but if you’re patient to wait for the right seat, you’ll get it.

Saturday: Sketch the Zoo

King penguins at the Central Park Zoo (Photo: Julie Larsen)

February 23 – @ the Central Park Zoo
Special Event Hosted by Joy Hecht

You've sketched the dioramas at the Museum of Natural History – now try some live animals!  And you can use any medium you like, no concern about watercolors at the zoo.

DETAILS:

Where:  Central Park Zoo, entrance behind the Arsenal, 64th and 5th Avenue

When:  Start at 10 a.m.  Meet by the entrance to the zoo, before going in.  Running late?  Meet us any time, we'll be there!

Lunch:  12:30 PM at the Dancing Crane Café, which is the zoo's cafeteria.  If you want a healthy meal, you might bring your own – they offer kid-oriented stuff, hamburgers, chicken fingers, pizza.  But they do sell Smithsonian-certified, organic, fair trade, bird-friendly coffee, which smelled pretty good.

Afternoon:  1:30 PM  - Back to sketching the critters or whatever else you want.

Show and Tell:  3:00 PM back at the Dancing Crane to share drawings, good stories and a beverage or snack of your choice.

Notes:

-   Bring a stool.  It gives you more options

-  Admission to the zoo is $14 for adults, $11 for seniors.  They do not accept the American Alliance of Museums membership – only Wildlife Conservation Society and NYC Museum Council memberships.

-  Regular ($14) admission to the zoo does not allow you to go out and come back in.

-  There is a "total experience" admission for $20.  It gets you admission to the regular zoo, the children's zoo and the theater, and also lets you go in and out.  They really push it, and that's the only kind of ticket you can get on line or from the ticket machines at the zoo.  For the normal ticket, you have to go to the ticket window.

-  The Dancing Crane Café is accessible both from inside and outside the zoo, is very nicely heated, and has bathrooms.  (They check to ensure that people don't go through to enter the zoo without paying.)

-  The zoo has a number of indoor areas as well as outdoor scenes to sketch.

Bet you didn't know that there is a museum dedicated to lighthouses! ....Well there is and it is on Staten Island. Join us for an ocean voyage (the Staten Island Ferry) and museum trip.  Housed in an historic building that served as a quarantine hospital for immigrants before Ellis Island was opened, this museum is dedicated to the history and workings of the lighthouses on Staten Island.  For more information about the Lighthouse Museum and directions,  click here: http://lighthousemuseum.org

After lunch we will visit the Staten Island Borough Hall to view the acclaimed murals commemorating events in the history of Staten Island.  Additional sketching opportunity is available in the waiting room of the ferry terminal on the Staten Island side.  Two large salt water fish tanks have wonderful examples of the fish that swim in the NYC harbor. Weekday Sketchers at Eldridge St Synagogue

Opened in 1887, this was the first great house out worship in America built by Jews from Eastern Europe.  After falling into terrible disrepair in the mid 20th Century, the building has been meticulously restored and now is listed on the National Historic Registry. It is now a museum rather than a house of worship.

Join us for a day of sketching the intricate woodwork, beautiful stained glass and soaring space in the only remaining marker of the great wave of Jewish migration to the  Lower East Side.   For more information about the building, its history and restoration, click here:https://www.eldridgestreet.org
