SATURDAY: Sketch the Frick

Someone please remind us, in the full heat of summer, how desperately we wanted to be sketching outdoors at the beginning of Spring.  Apologies for the late notice, I was hoping for a shift in the weather.  Anyway we have a great indoor plan that should fun.

Imagine being given the run of an incredible New York home, complete with elegant furniture and world-class artwork.  The Fricks have invited us to sketch at their place on Fifth Avenue.  Imagine a living room with a pair of Holbein's on either side of the fireplace.

Currently there is a wonderful Turner exhibit and a show about porcelain although I’m always drawn to sketching the furniture and the rooms themselves.

DETAILS

The Basics:  Meet at the The Frick Collection, at 1 East 70th Street, at 11 AM on Saturday, April 1st (Happy April Fool’s Day).

Lunch:  12:30 - Catch as catch can.  There is no cafeteria at the Frick and it’s a long walk to a limited number of places.  Best bet might be to eat a hearty breakfast or buy a quick bite from food vendors around Central Park

Afternoon:  Back to sketching.

Show and Tell:  3:00 - To share drawings, good stories.  All potential places to meet are a long walk and/or extremely expensive.  We’ll try to find a quiet spot at the Frick to socialize and share the day's sketches.

Weekday Urban Sketchers at the Flower Show and Hung Yi  Animal Sculptures

This week the Weekday Sketchers will explore explosive color and fantastic creatures.  First we will visit the Macy's Flower Show where the flagship store is turned into a wonderland of fantastic floral displays.  After a lunch break we will work our way up Broadway from 36th to 40th Streets to sketch a heard of fantastic animals created by the artist Hung Yi.

This is a day for color however for the first part of the day we will be in a crowded retail space, please bring a dry medium that is easy to use: watercolor pencils, markers etc. It is doubtful that you will be able to use a stool in the store.  The afternoon session will be outdoors along the seating area on Broadway where there are tables and chairs where you can set up and use watercolor.  Our lunch break will be in the seating area outside of Macy's along Broadway.

Inside - out of the rain at the Museum of Natural History

The weather has done us in.  No sketching outside tomorrow.  The temperature should be reasonable but it’s looking like we’ll get rain.  Back inside, … but no worries, we'll have an interesting day.

Meet at the Museum of Natural History.  We’re going to focus on the third floor (less dinosaurs = less crowds). We’ll meet at an obscure section - New York City Birds which showcases the rich diversity of birds in the greater New York area. The region attracts more than 400 species of birds because of its varied habitats—which include ponds and lakes, marshes and seashore, open meadows and wooded sections—and due to its location along major bird migratory routes.

Our focus for the day will be limited to all the exhibits on the third floor.

The Basics:  Meet at the Museum of Natural History, on the third floor at the New York City Birds exhibit at 11 AM, on Saturday, March 25th.  

Lunch:  12:30 - In the basement cafeteria.  Bring your own or dine on museum food. (Check out the Dino-nuggets  fried food shaped for six year olds).

Afternoon:  1:30 Back to sketching.

Show and Tell:  3:00 - Back to the basement cafeteria where we will share drawings, good stories and a snack or refreshments if you're so inclined.

NOTES:
-   Bring a stool if you own one.  It makes everything so much easier.
-   Admission is pay what you wish. Be generous as you can, the museum is a NYC treasure.
-   The coat check is located on the ground floor of the planetarium and costs $2.

SATURDAY: Sketch Chelsea Waterside Park

I had to check twice to make sure I was reading correctly.   Looks like the weather will be warm enough to sketch outside on Saturday. 

The Chelsea Waterside Park is a wonderful place for us to sketch.  We’ll find enough vitamin D to make using sun-block a smart choice, open spaces, the Hudson River, grass, trees, people playing, families, pets, bicyclers, skaters and a 360 degree urban view of NYC and Jersey skyline.  We will explore the whole area around the park.

If we are betrayed by the weather we have the Chelsea Art Galleries as our back-up plan.  An email will be sent and also posted to Facebook if we're going to need our backup plan.

Weekday Urban Sketchers Try Again for

 Onassis Society And St. Pat's

Last week we were snowed out of our sketch date. The management of the Onassis Society has invited us back for this Thursday March 23, 2017  Here is the post from last week with updated information.  Please RSVP directly to Alan Wernicke at alanwernicke@yahoo.com.

We tend to think of Greek sculpture as a static art form: beautiful but removed and remote.  The current exhibit at the Onassis Society is bringing this art form to life in "A World of Emotion: Greece from 700 BC to 200 AD".   Gathered from around the world, this show features pieces never seen outside of Greece: statues, vases, theatrical masks, amulets, coins and votive offerings will explore the attitudes of people in classical antiquity that would resonate in our modern world.

Located on 5th Ave just north of St. Pat's, we will be able to capture the ancient world for our morning project.  After lunch we will reconvene in St. Patrick's Cathedral to draw the beautiful gothic structure and many artifacts and statues.

Hoping against hope, I have been holding off on canceling tomorrow's Weekday Sketchers group at the Onassis Center, but the weather forecast is really dire so ....I am canceling the program for tomorrow!

SATURDAY: Sketch the Brooklyn Museum

Saturday March 11th

While winter winds-up we’ll be indoors this Saturday in one of NYC somewhat lesser known magnificent museums.  There’s loads to see.

The Brooklyn Museum acquired its first works from sub-Saharan Africa in 1900,  just three years after the Museum opened its doors. Today the collection numbers over five thousand items, making it the largest collection of African art in an American art museum. The collection of sub-Saharan African art is focused on the arts of West and Central Africa.  And our sketching efforts will concentrate on that part of the museum, although everyone is of course free to explore.

What:   The Brooklyn Museum - paying special attention to their African Arts collection.

Where:  200 Eastern Parkway

When:  11 AM to 3 PM

Lunch:  12:30 in the Cafeteria, - buy or bring your own.

Afternoon:  1:30 Back to sketching.

Show and Tell:  3:00 -  Meet in the lobby for a short walk to Tooker’s Alley 793 Washington Ave, where we will share drawings, good stories and and a snack or refreshments if you're so inclined.

NOTES:
-  Bring a stool if you have one.
-  Be aware that the museum wants pencil sketching only. This rule is unevenly enforced.

-  BY SUBWAY

• 2-3 train to Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum.

Weekday Urban Sketchers Take a World Tour Thursday

First Japan then France....join in!

This week we will visit Japan and France, without leaving NYC!  First we will sketch the Japan Exhibit at Grand Central Station, then we travel back in time to Paris in the 60's..  

Japan Tourism Organization is hosting Japan Week with a Zen garden, traditional crafts, food and a look at the future of high tech gadgets.  The story of Chiune Sugihara, Japan's Oskar Schindler will also be featured. 

Eat while you draw or grab a bite on the way to the next destination: Fashion Institute of Technology to see the show Paris Refashioned 1957 - 68.  This show examines the influence of French Haute Couture on popular culture around the world. The young rising stars of fashion who would become household names, were bringing in a new era of dressing that changed our perception of fashion to this day. See and sketch the early works of YSL, Nina Ricci, Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin and many more.

TurnStyle at Columbus Circle

PART 1 - TURNSTYLES

Experience an underground food and shopping hall in a refurbished subway passage extending the length of one city block long. Similar to the Chelsea Market, but brighter and more modern.

Highly curated vendors and no big chains were allowed. There is a counter running the length of the hallway, with counter stools. You can use these, however it is suggested to bring a stool so you do not take up seating for customer use.

Joan and Susan will start somewhere around mid point of the length of the hallway.  Look for two blondes on stools busy sketching.

 Lunch:  No formal get together for lunch. Since this has a great inexpensive food court, graze as the mood strikes.

Show and Tell:  We will meet at the end of the shops toward 57th St at 2:45 for a Show and Tell.

NOTES:
-   Bring a stool if you own one, it gives you sketching flexibility
-   1000 S 8th Ave  There is no need to swipe your Metro card to get in! You can enter at the only orange subway entrances on the East side of 57th & 58th Streets on 8th Ave.
-   Take the A, B, C, D, and #1  to Columbus Circle at 59th St.
-   There are no restrooms, but they can be found street level at Starbucks, or at Time Warner.


PART 2 - DR. SKETCHY

Not an Urban Sketcher event but a fun experience! Homage will be paid to couturier Christian Dior in a new twist, modeled by Mademoiselle Quaintrelle.

It is $12 in advance or $15, at the door. Flute Bar, 205 W 54th St.  The doors open at 4:00.  Getting a good seat is a smart strategy.
