The park was filled with kids and families, and that's what caught my eye:

{New York City Urban Sketchers} 9/28 Saturday Sketch: Central Park Edges

This Saturday we'll walk around the east side of Central Park 

and sketch Pulitzer Fountain, 

The Pond 

and the area around the zoo.

We will start at at 10 AM at the Pulitzer Fountain, 
                  5th avenue and 59th Street in front of the Plaza Hotel


Transportation: N,Q,R train to 59th Street; 4,5,6 to 59th Street; F to 57th Street.

Sketching the Pier and then the Highline - September 21, 2013

I seemed to focus on the "odd" this Saturday.  

Walking down 40th Street I passed what I believe was once the HQ for American Standard.  I think of them as the toilet bowl manufacturer for the world.  In the place where other buildings would have gargoyles they have near naked people writhing with plumbing parts.  Seems hard to believe but here's a photo:

Diane Arbus is the queen of "odd" photos.  A street graffiti artist used one of her images for a peace poster:

I saw this plastic resin sculpture reminiscent of the Carravagio painting of the Young Sick Bacchus on the Highline

The Sketching day began in Starbucks;

An international woman of mystery skulking about in an unnecessary rain coat, and a woman looking for her companion to show up.

Saturday 9/21 Sketch Date-Sun and water-Pier 62

This Saturday we will take in some sun and water at Pier 62, the newest park along the Hudson River Waterfront

We will start at 10:00 AM at the entrance of Chelsea Waterside Park at 23rd Street and 11th Avenue
Transportation: A,C,E train to 23rd street walk 3 blocks west.

Sketching Fifth Avenue's Museum Mile - September 14, 2013

We met in front of the Guggenheim Museum and sat on a  shady bench outside Central Park.

We moved uptown and relocated by a major entry to the park - a people-watchers paradise.

I often become more interested in drawing my fellow Urban Sketchers.  After all, unlike everyone else, they hold still.

We had  lunch at the Museo del Barrio where we met up with Elizabeth and then walked back across Fifth Avenue to the Conservatory Garden.  The Conservatory is one of the hidden treasures of NY, a real island of peace and tranquility.  I sketched the Three Dancing Maidens fountain.

Sunil joined us in the Gardens, first time I've seen him since before the summer began.  I sketched him and Denise.

Saturday 9/14 Museums, runners and gardens

This Saturday we will walk up 5th avenue to sketch the Guggenheim and Jewish Museums, the runners at Engineer's Gate and the  Central Park Conservancy Garden.

We will start at 10:00 AM in front of the Guggenheim and take it from there.

Madison Square Park- Sept.7th

This is what i drew the other day in Trinity Church.

Madison Park - NYC USk 09-07-2013

Madison Park sit's in the shadow of the Flatiron Building.  I arrived early, got a cup of coffee and did a quick sketch of the iconic building in the early morning light.

The park had a summer art exhibit by Orly Genger.  Using 1.4 million feet of nautical rope covered with 3.500 gallons of red, yellow and blue paint.  She's created undulating mountains of rope, woven into forms throughout the park.  The painting I did looks so unlikely that I also took a photo to document the temporary exhibition.

The good thing about the park was that it had comfortable sketching.  There were loads of benches with lots of good things to draw.

Alison was sketching to my left and Elizabeth was on my right.   Alison had to leave early, and when she got up to leave Tarunita came over to ask about our sketching.  She's originally from Australia and had just moved to NYC from LA.  As we chatted I did a quick sketch.

There were interesting sketch opportunities nearby.  An older couple in wheel chairs shared a lunch together.

And a new mother was photographing her baby in the park.

After taking a break for a late afternoon lunch together we went back to the park for an extra hour of sketching.  The scene in front of me included New Yorkers doing their best to imitate Manet's Luncheon in the Grass.

And the last sketch of the day was a man who I thought of as The Poet.  He seemed deep in thought and at one point he took out a book and started writing notes.   The odd thing was that he was wearing a handkerchief around his face, ... like a bank robber in a Western.  New York is a a big enough town for the Poet to be a genuine creative genius struck by inspiration at the moment I sketched him, or one more crazy person out there doing his own thing.

This Saturday it's Madison Square Park
 

 We'll stay in the park, so it'll be hard to not find us.
There's plenty to draw in the park and its immediate surroundings.

Meeting location: Entrance at 23rd and Broadway (in front of the satue of William Seward)
